Managing Director – Data, Analytics and AI at Citi

In leadership (as in life overall), finding the right balance is key. But, the ability to achieve the right balance is not easy and requires practice and introspection. From classical leadership models like “Situational Leadership” (Blanchard & Hersey, 1969) to the more modern “7 Leadership Tensions” model by Jordan, Wade & Yokoi (HBR, 2022), all emphasise that effective leadership is adaptive and can pivot based on the situation. The 7 Tensions model resonated a lot with me and felt very relatable and applicable to leadership in business today. The tension between the Power Holder and Power Sharer, for instance, is something I have personally experienced in the past few years. While Power Sharing is often an effective model, during times of change and uncertainty, a Power Holding style that provides reassurance and clear direction tends to work better. As a leader in a techno-functional area, other tensions, such as The Perfectionist vs. Accelerator or the Teller vs. Listener, also resonated deeply with me. Leadership today is about versatility. This journey is not straightforward, but it is incredibly important. The mental model proposed by the authors is a wonderful tool as we all strive to become more effective leaders.
