Virus-armored macrophages for battling cancer? Yes! A recent study shows promising data on conjugating oncolytic adenovirus to the surfaces of macrophages - and these "warrior" macrophages can downregulate “don't eat me” signals from tumor cells, such as CD47 and CD24, and therefore kill them. After co-culturing murine breast cancer cells and virus-loaded macrophages, the team used TissueFAXS Spectra slide scanner and StrataQuest image analysis software to demonstrate preferential migration of engineered macrophages toward tumor cells, showing their tumor-targeting capability in vitro.
