People with an intellectual disability can play a valuable role in healthcare institutions. This is shown by recent research at Tilburg University. According to educational psychologist Prof. Petri Embregts, they offer support in a practice that is under pressure, such as taking people for a walk, playing a board game with them, or reading to them before bedtime. “This group of people has a lot to offer healthcare,” Embregts says. Her study touches on the traditional opinions about who can provide care and shows that there are opportunities in the fields of employability as well as inclusion.
