How can we increase labor productivity without losing sight of the people behind it? In the latest interview in our series on strengthening the Dutch and European economy, Professor Irmgard Borghouts argues that higher labor productivity starts with investing in people. While technology and innovation are important, sustainable productivity also depends on healthy, skilled, and resilient workers. As labour shortages, population ageing, and rising mental health challenges put increasing pressure on the workforce, Borghouts highlights the importance of lifelong learning, preventing burnout, and enabling people to combine work with caregiving responsibilities. “The debate on labor productivity should not only be about technology or economic growth.
