Part I: The Paradox on Shaanxi Road China’s official youth unemployment rate sits around 16% this year (official # with Western economists’ estimate going higher.) You’d expect that to show up as empty storefronts and quiet streets. Instead, two weeks into a month in my birthplace, Shanghai, I’m watching creators — genuinely warm, endlessly curious, camera-ready — ask to photograph my toddlers (which I had to kindly decline) inside a Qing-to-Republic-era mansion that now serves high tea and invitation-only Prada haute couture. That mansion is Rong Zhai, on North Shaanxi Road in Jing’an — the neighborhood I was born in, and, biased as I am, still the most charming pocket of Shanghai: equal parts old and modern. Built in 1918 for Rong Zongjing, China’s “Flour King,” a self-made textile and flour tycoon. After war, revolution, decades as a state research institute, and a ten-year stint as Rupert Murdoch’s Shanghai office, Prada leased it in 2011, spent six years restoring it plank by plank with Italian and Chinese craftsmen, and reopened it in 2017 as a cultural hub. Today the second floor houses Prada’s first standalone restaurant in Asia — designed in close collaboration with Wong Kar-wai, the filmmaker, if you’ve paid any attention to art on this side of the world. Prada runs it; Wong shaped the concept, the name, the mirrored, dreamlike rooms that feel lifted straight out of In the Mood for Love. A century-old flour fortune, reborn as a luxury stage, a few blocks from a labor market this tight. That’s the actual texture of China today: Macro pressure and micro abundance, coexisting in the same zip code. The creator economy, not papering over the unemployment story, is a parallel economy running on different rules entirely — attention, platform, content — not headcount. Paradox? Yes. Beauty? Firmly!
