Dr Apriana Tuahae Kaukapakapa Mahuika was many things to many people. Chair of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Porou from its establishment until his passing on 9 February 2015, he was well known for being a visionary and respected Iwi leader. To me, he was a beloved grandfather to my children and, more importantly, my friend. Someone who taught me a lot about leadership, and service to community above all else. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about all the times we talked about how things could be better and the future of Aotearoa.
