His funeral in 1857 drew an estimated 100,000 people — the largest public funeral in Paris since Napoleon. He was a tailor's son who became France's most beloved songwriter: his political verses were sung in workshops and cafés, imprisoned him twice, and helped create the Napoleonic myth that shaped the second half of the century. Rue Béranger — 3rd arrondissement. Named after Pierre-Jean de Béranger, the poet of the people. His street sits at the northern edge of the Marais.
