Rising like a fairy-tale fortress from the forests of the Bernese Oberland, the Gstaad Palace has defined alpine glamour since 1913. Designed by Dutch architect Adrien van Dorsser in a striking châteauesque Swiss chalet style, this independent icon has been family-run for three generations. It has famously hosted Hollywood royalty from Elizabeth Taylor to Louis Armstrong, and Michael Jackson even tried to buy it. The building holds incredible secrets; during World War II, its cellar vault safely stored gold and riches for the Swiss Bank Corporation. Today, that historic gold vault serves traditional fondue as the restaurant La Fromagerie. Outside the palace gates, you can quickly head out to explore the upscale shops along the Gstaad Promenade, hike around the breathtaking Lake Lauenen, or catch a cable car up to the stunning heights of Glacier 3000.
