On 21 April 1760, the Society of Arts held the first British Exhibition of Contemporary Artists. Admission to the exhibition was free, although a catalogue was available for sixpence. It is estimated that around 20,000 visitors attended. The exhibition showcased 68 artists, including Joshua Reynolds, Benjamin Wilson, Richard Cosway and Louis-François Roubiliac. A quote on the front page of the catalogue by the Roman poet Martial noted that living artists were often overlooked, while old masters long dead were preferred.
