🚙 Finished Vehicle Surge: Port of Charleston Injects Capital to Boost Ro-Ro Capacity The South Carolina Ports Authority (SC Ports) has announced a targeted infrastructure expansion plan at the Port of Charleston to drastically scale its roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) handling capacity and accommodate climbing automotive cargo volumes. The infrastructure injection focuses entirely on upgrading the Columbus Street Terminal, Charleston’s primary gateway for finished vehicle imports and exports. The Blueprint for the Automotive Expansion: The Land Reclamation Loop: SC Ports will transform and pave an additional 22 acres of specialized staging yard, instantly expanding the terminal's finished vehicle processing and inventory capacity by over 20%. Strengthening Berth Infrastructure: To handle next-generation, high-capacity Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs), the project integrates structural reinforcements along the primary vessel berths and updates specialized ramp configurations to increase vehicle offloading speed. The Supply Chain Pressure Release: The automotive sector has faced intense port bottleneck friction throughout 2026 due to mismatched inland rail capacity and a shortage of specialized global PCTC vessel space. This localized expansion is engineered to reduce dwell times for major OEMs, ensuring vehicle inventories move seamlessly from ocean berths to regional dealer networks.
