🚂 CSX Opens Reconstructed Baltimore Rail Tunnel, Launching Double-Stack Service In a massive victory for East Coast rail freight, CSX Transportation and Maryland state officials have officially inaugurated double-stack rail service at the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore, following the successful completion of the historic Howard Street Tunnel Project. The $495 million public-private initiative resolved a century-old rail bottleneck by lowering the tracks of the 131-year-old tunnel by 18 inches. Along with clearance upgrades at 21 other sites across Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, the infrastructure overhaul now allows ultra-tall, double-stacked container trains to pass smoothly through the corridor.
