He welcomed me into his world as my Airbnb host in San Francisco, the first stop on my Churchill Fellowship as I travel the globe investigating thrift and charity retail. And let me say: Billy’s home, and this city, were the perfect place to begin. A Jewish New Yorker by birth, Billy made San Francisco his home nearly 50 years ago—and oh, what a home it is. Some may call it maximalist, but I say: there is always room for more! Each corner bursts with curated chaos and intentional beauty—from shoes crafted by iconic fashion houses to art plucked from the pulse of the world’s most unique creators. The space is more than a visual feast; it’s a sensory memoir. Even Kamala Harris has found her way into the wonder of Billy’s living galley of moments. As Billy would say, we are simpatico. But don’t be fooled into thinking the magic stops at interiors. Billy Bragman is a businessman through and through—always with authenticity, style, and grit. From antiques and collectibles to Billy Blue, his renowned menswear store where he sourced the finest European fashion, Billy’s taste has always been ahead of the curve. In fact, pieces from Billy Blue are still turning up in top-tier vintage stores like Sui Generis, proving that good style never dies. And in true renaissance fashion, Billy even had his “Johnny Rose” moment—running his own video rental chain, Video Wave, back when tapes were king. As a host, Billy is unmatched. The little things—freshly brewed coffee, thoughtful gestures, warm conversation—were all there. But it was the big things too: he carved out time to take me around the city, to share its secret corners, its history, its character. He made sure I didn’t just visit San Francisco—I felt it. And always, the stories flowed. Honest, hilarious, heartfelt reflections on a life lived fully, freely, and with fabulous flair. Tales of friends, adventures, love, loss, and yes—plenty of substances—wove a rich tapestry of the man and the times that made him. In Billy, I haven’t just found the best place to stay in a city that radiates colour, culture, and life—I’ve found a new friend. One I will cherish. One I already miss.
