Today is Windrush Day, when we celebrate and honour the generations of Caribbean people who came to the UK and helped shape the country we know today. We had the privilege of spending time with a remarkable group of women at The Positive Network, their beloved community group in Balham, South London. Many arrived in Britain in the 1950s and 60s, barely older than teenagers or in their early twenties, answering the call to help staff the newly formed NHS or taking up other essential jobs that kept Britain moving. They left home to build new lives far from their families. Becoming nurses, factory workers, mothers and community leaders, working resiliently. Now retired (and in their late 80s and 90s!), they still come together at The Positive Network – sharing meals, music, friendship and laughter. It was a privilege to hear their stories firsthand.
