Most people inherit land. Few spend a lifetime protecting what grows on it. When modern farming pushed many native crops to the edge of extinction, one farmer from Uttar Pradesh quietly dedicated decades to saving them. Raghupat Singh, fondly known as the "Krishi Pandit" of Moradabad, spent over five decades preserving rare seeds, reviving disappearing vegetables, and helping farmers adopt sustainable practices. His life's work has now been recognised with the Padma Shri, awarded posthumously. From developing more than 100 crop varieties to bringing back over 55 rare and endangered vegetables, he turned his fields into a living seed bank. Nearly 3 lakh farmers benefited from his guidance, innovations, and deep belief that farming is about protecting the future, not just harvesting the present. Though he is no longer with us, every seed he saved continues to tell his story. #PadmaShri #RaghupatSingh #IndianFarmers #SeedConservation #SustainableAgriculture [Raghupat Singh, Padma Shri 2026, seed conservation, sustainable agriculture]
