My latest article, “Father Zeus and the Order of the Odyssey”, has now been published on the Odyssey Illustrated site. Why does Zeus matter? Not because he is merely the thunderbolt-wielding god of popular imagination, but because he represents something our age desperately needs to rediscover: order. In Homer’s world, chaos is not romantic. Disorder destroys homes, cities, families and souls. The Odyssey is not simply the story of a man trying to get back to Ithaca. It is the story of a man struggling to return from chaos to cosmos — from fragmentation to meaning. With a new Odyssey film about to appear, there could hardly be a better time to revisit the original epic and ask why it still exerts such power over our imagination. That theme lies at the heart of my book, Gods, Heroes and Us: Greek Myths in the Modern Era. These myths are not dead stories. They are living patterns. They explain us. There seems to be a growing interest in this message — from my recent GB News Book Club interview with Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, to my conversation with Nick Buckley MBE on The Odyssey, and now this new article on Zeus. Perhaps the old gods still have something urgent to say!
