What if the key to scaling sustainability isn’t choosing between profit and the planet? What if both could thrive? UTSA Carlos Alvarez College of Business professor Minghe Sun studies the hidden economics behind the circular economy. In a new study, he reveals how rebates, resale markets and consumer behavior interact to create opportunities for manufacturers, retailers and environmentally conscious shoppers. His findings challenge the idea that secondhand markets and new product sales must compete. Most interestingly, his research shows that well-designed rebate programs can encourage new purchases and participation in resale markets, creating value across the entire product lifecycle.
