As demand for GLP-1 medications for weight management grew, a team of UT San Antonio researchers discovered an unexpected consequence. Led by graduate student Jordan Miller '25 and Professor David Han, the team studied national poison control center data and identified a sharp rise in semaglutide-related calls following the FDA’s 2021 approval of the medication for chronic weight management. Many cases were linked to preventable dosing errors, highlighting the importance of patient education as GLP-1 use continues. The study demonstrates how data science can uncover meaningful public health trends and help inform safer medication use.
