Dr Ting Lu from the University of Illinois and Dr Stephen Techtmann from Michigan Technological University have devised a way to use plastic to make edible, protein-rich ‘microbial mass’. The process is divided into two parts. First, the plastic polymers are broken down using chemicals. Then, naturally occurring microbes convert this plastic into nutrient-rich biomass that could be consumed. Dr Lu was inspired to work on this due to the food scarcity crisis in the rural and impoverished areas. They hope to upscale this method to be used as a tool for disaster relief. They also hope that this technology could be used to solve two major global issues - plastic waste and the food security crisis. Dr Ting Lu and Dr Stephen Techtmann were awarded the Future Insight Prize for their work. @illinois1867 @michigantech #Plastic #Protein #renewableenergy #plasticfree #conservation #ecology #greenliving #consciousliving #climate #sustainability #ecofriendly #sustainable #sustainableliving #Nature #pollution #environment #zerowaste #noplastic #climatechange #Health #Fitness #food #zerowasteliving #onlinejournal #Illinois #foodsecurity #science #agriculture #research #future #work #university #circulareconomy #technology #security #water #Michigan #USA
