Alex Honnold Named to TIME Magazine's Inaugural TIME100 Sports List. TIME named The North Face athlete Alex Honnold to the inaugural 2026 TIME100 Sports list, recognizing 100 of the most influential figures shaping the global sports landscape. "Alex Honnold is our modern-day Evel Knievel, with his death-defying feats bringing him world renown. The American rock climber rose to prominence when he scaled El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without ropes or safety gear in 2017—a feat featured in the Oscar-winning documentary Free Solo. In January, Honnold climbed the tallest building in Taiwan, a 101-story structure, for a livestreamed event on Netflix. The spectacle drew 6.2 million views in its first weekend, making it the third-most watched English-language program for the week on the streamer. When he was close to the top, Honnold—who began climbing at a gym in Sacramento at age 5—dangled off the side of the building. “No!!!!” a commentator screamed on the broadcast. “Why?!” On Jimmy Kimmel Live 10 days later, Honnold chalked up the terrifying move to “style points.” “You’ve just got to play a little bit,” he said.
