Today, on World Blood Donor Day, we recognize the organizations that make life‑saving care through blood donations possible. Every day, hospitals in low‑income countries face a reality most of us never see: a severe shortage of safe blood. According to the latest WHO's report, these countries collect just 4.5 donations per 1,000 people - six times fewer than high‑income nations and not even half the recommended value of 10 donations per 1,000 people by WHO. In many of these countries, a big share of all transfusions go to children under five, often fighting severe anaemia or malaria. Yet only 52% of donated blood are processed into components, and screening capacity remains limited.
