Debating Society - Stimulating ideas, Broadening debate, Catalysing action.
Last week was London Tech Week, and Lord Patrick Vallance, who you may recall spoke frequently during the Covid pandemic, gave a speech about the importance of innovation, collaboration and creating the conditions for new ideas to flourish through the lens of the 18th Century Lunar Society. Lord Vallance explored how the Lunar Society helped drive the Industrial Revolution, bringing together scientists, engineers, manufacturers and entrepreneurs such as James Watt, Joseph Priestley and Josiah Wedgwood. Rather than working in isolation, they shared ideas across disciplines, turning scientific discovery into practical innovation that changed the world. Lord Vallance argues that the real genius of the Lunar Society was not any single invention, but the connections it fostered between talented people from different fields, something the modern-day Society is fully committed to continue. In his speech, Lord Vallance drew parallels between the Lunar Society's collaborative approach and today's technology and innovation ecosystems, including the UK Government's recently announced Quantum Growth Alliance. A timely reminder that great breakthroughs rarely come from individuals alone โ they emerge when people with different perspectives come together to exchange ideas.
