When Lydia Canning thinks back to her time as a patient at SickKids, what stands out is the volunteers who did crafts with her in her room. In a full-circle moment, she later joined SickKids’ Women’s Auxiliary Volunteers (WAV) — and has now volunteered at the hospital for more than 40 years. This spring, Lydia became the WAV’s president, overseeing the dynamic group of more than 200 members who volunteer everywhere from the Surgical Waiting Room to the 5Fifty5 gift shop. The WAV’s impact across the hospital is deeply felt. “They’re just part of the fabric here,” says Karen Kinnear, vice-president of clinical operations and patient and family experience.
