Finding the right blood product for a patient is about far more than matching A, B or O — it’s the result of meticulous testing and expert decision‑making by the dedicated team in SickKids’ Blood Transfusion Laboratory (often called the Blood Bank). This team of medical laboratory professionals apply deep scientific expertise every day —reviewing patient histories, investigating antibodies, identifying blood group antigens and completing complex crossmatch testing — to help ensure each patient receives the most compatible blood product possible. This careful work plays a critical role in reducing the risk of transfusion reactions and supporting safe, high‑quality care. Beyond testing, the team manages blood products with the precision of a pharmacy: slowly and safely defrosting and preparing frozen plasma, maintaining platelets under strict conditions, modifying and splitting products to meet the unique needs of paediatric patients and closely monitoring specialized equipment to ensure products are ready when care teams need them, from the operating room to inpatient units. During #MedLabWeek, we’re celebrating this highly skilled profession and all medical laboratory professionals across SickKids who combine science, critical thinking and teamwork to support patient and family-centred care every day.
