The SickKids scientific community is saddened by the passing of Dr. J. Craig Venter last week. Dr. Venter was an influential leader in genomics and synthetic biology whose vision helped reshape modern medicine. From leading a team to produce the first human genome draft to pioneering whole-genome shotgun sequencing to creating the first self-replicating cell with a synthetic genome, he consistently pushed science into new territory. At SickKids, we were privileged to know Dr. Venter as a collaborator and friend. Our Chief of Research, Dr. Stephen Scherer, partnered with him on two landmark projects: the first integrated sequence of human chromosome 7 (Science, 2003) and the first diploid genome sequence of an individual (PLoS Biology, 2007). Together, their teams demonstrated that nearly half of genes vary in sequence between different people — an insight that helped lay the foundation for precision genomic approaches to health that SickKids continues to advance today. Dr. Venter was also a stalwart member of SickKids' Scientific Advisory & Innovation Board, where his astute perspectives challenged and inspired us. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Venter's family, and the global research community. We last welcomed Dr. Venter at SickKids in 2024 as part of an esteemed panel on “The Future Technology, Science and Health of Homo sapiens.” With Drs. Geoffrey Hinton and Kathryn North, Dr. Venter discusses the future of science and our species. His brilliance lives on with us: https://lnkd.in/e6cWSXh5 #InMemoriam
