The Paper Straw Problem No One Talks About in Operations When plastic straws started disappearing, paper straws quickly became the default alternative 🌍 On the surface, the switch looked like a sustainability win. But in day-to-day operations, the reality is more complicated. Paper straws are fragile by design 🥤 In cold drinks they soften quickly, which often leads customers to ask for a second straw. In busy hospitality environments, that often means more straws used per drink. They also create operational waste 🗑️ Paper straws usually cannot be recycled after use because they’re contaminated with liquids and food residue. Many are also coated with adhesives or thin linings to slow down disintegration, which can make recycling even harder.
