The North Sea has rapidly evolved from an economic workspace into a strategic domain where security, energy, and nature converge 🌊 This new HCSS exploratory study shows that these interests do not simply compete with one another – they can also reinforce each other: https://lnkd.in/eeyNNX4G As offshore infrastructure expands and the security environment deteriorates, new vulnerabilities are emerging. At the same time, a significant opportunity arises: investments in maritime security can also contribute to nature restoration and improved ecological understanding. The key is collaboration. Think of: 🔹 Dual-use sensors supporting both security and ecological monitoring; 🔹 A shared, layered maritime situational picture of the North Sea; 🔹 Combined protected areas that benefit both nature and critical infrastructure; 🔹 Integrated enforcement and incident response. “The North Sea does not require two separate agendas, but a single integrated approach. The technology and resources already exist – the challenge lies in connecting systems, interests, and responsibilities,” lead author Frank Bekkers states. At the same time, the message is clear: without robust governance and stronger enforcement, these opportunities will remain largely unrealised. “Policymakers must now move from exploration to implementation. Establish joint pilot projects and organise data sharing – otherwise the added value will remain theoretical,” adds co-author Pieter-Jan Vandoren. The study provides concrete pathways to make this happen, including targeted pilot projects and clearer articulation of priorities from ecological stakeholders.
