"The target is simple: make reuse the default question before demolition." That's exactly what 3XN/GXN, Arup, BVN Architecture, BG&E and Multiplex achieved with Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney. They transformed an ageing, underused office building into what has been described as the world's first "upcycled skyscraper". By retaining 65% of the original structure and 98% of its core, the project avoided more than 12,000 tonnes of embodied carbon while doubling the building's usable space. A Finalist in our Build a Waste-Free World category in 2025, Quay Quarter Tower is demonstrating how large-scale reuse can help reshape the future of the built environment. Find out more in this BusinessGreen interview with Stuart Stone where Fred Holt from 3XN/GXN explains how an 'ageing, unloved' building was turned into the world's first 'upcycled skyscraper'.
