The Earthshot mission in action - from the High Seas to outer space. Last week in Japan, Tekau Frere MPA Coordinator for the High Seas Alliance, Winner of The Earthshot Prize 2025 Earthshot Prize to Revive Our Oceans, met with Earthshot Prize Council Member and former astronaut Naoko Yamazaki to discuss the shared challenges facing both the High Seas and outer space. Naoko is pictured holding the PrepCom 3 critter - the seahorse. For each meeting of the BBNJ Agreement (the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement, also known as The High Seas Treaty), the High Seas Alliance creates a small crocheted critter that becomes the unofficial mascot of the negotiations. The agreement aims to better protect marine biodiversity in areas of the ocean beyond any single country’s jurisdiction.
