We are pleased to share a new poem on The Blood Project: “The Handkerchief” by Sarah Slattery. Tracing a course from myelodysplastic syndrome to acute myeloid leukemia, the poem captures the repetition of treatment, the focus on laboratory values, and the accumulation of small, daily moments that shape the patient and family experience. Through structure and rhythm, “The Handkerchief” offers a glimpse into the lived experience of serious illness and the ways memory and identity remain present throughout.
