Apple announced that John Ternus, an affable mechanical engineer who rose through the ranks of the company’s hardware division, will be its next chief executive, succeeding Tim Cook. Ternus is currently Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering. His appointment will take effect September 1, and Cook will become executive chairman, replacing long-time chair Art Levinson. Ternus, 50, steps into the shoes of two giants of American business. Steve Jobs, who led the invention of the most popular consumer product in history, and Cook, who squeezed so much profit from the device that Apple became the world’s most valuable company.
