A key challenge in many waste management systems is ensuring that collected waste can be effectively sorted and recovered to keep materials in circulation and generate value from waste. Project ParikraM was developed to help address this challenge in Mathura-Vrindavan, one of India’s most important pilgrimage centres, where local waste management systems face pressure from both residents and a growing number of visitors. Developed in close collaboration with municipal authorities, ParikraM centres on a Material Recovery Facility funded by the Alliance, built and operated by Recity, and owned by the municipality. The facility is designed to process mixed municipal solid waste, recover recyclable materials, and valorise non-recyclables – including low-value plastics – as refuse-derived fuel for sale to cement kilns. Since its inception in 2025, the project has collected and valorised more than 10,000 tons of plastic waste, helping divert significant volumes from landfills while supporting local recycling efforts. For the Alliance, projects like ParikraM support our broader efforts to strengthen collection, sorting and recycling systems, helping move more materials back into circulation and creating the conditions for greater recycling at scale. The video below shares the story of ParikraM and the partnerships behind it, offering insights that may help inform similar approaches in other cities. #EndPlasticWaste #CircularEconomy #WasteManagement #AdvocacyToAction #SystemsChange
