Convening the right people is how meaningful progress begins. At the Texas A&M Health Telehealth Institute in College Station last Friday, we brought together rural health leaders from across Texas A&M Health and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center to focus on a shared goal: strengthening health in rural Texas. This working session moved beyond updates to focus on what works—and how to scale it. Together, participants identified proven, community-based approaches that address prevention, chronic disease, behavioral health and other drivers of health—meeting communities where they are, not just within clinical settings. The discussion highlighted the importance of trusted local institutions, expanded workforce models and community-driven design, while building on the complementary strengths of both our institutions in rural health practice, research and statewide reach. The result is a focused set of concepts aligned with Rural Texas Strong—designed to be “shovel-ready” for communities to incorporate as new funding opportunities emerge. Strengthening rural health takes more than ideas. It takes alignment, action and a commitment to the communities we serve.
