I’m pleased to share that my article, “A Full Moon on the Screen: Terang Boelan, Roekiah, and Vernacular Modernism in the Late Colonial Malay World,” is now published in Indonesia and the Malay World (Online First). The piece revisits the 1937 film Terang Boelan and the stardom of Roekiah beyond a national milestone narrative, situating them within a transcolonial Malay-world media economy spanning the Dutch East Indies and British Malaya. Drawing on Malay-language newspapers, film magazines, radio schedules, and advertising, I examine how cinema, keroncong, celebrity, and even fashion shaped shared experiences of modernity across colonial borders, engaging Miriam Hansen’s concept of vernacular modernism.
