How do you store sunlight for the night? With concrete, thermal oil – and smart engineering. Together with @ENERGYNEST, we're implementing one of the largest commercial power-to-heat systems with thermal storage for industrial processes at tesa's Hamburg plant: 10 MW electric heater, 10 MW steam heat exchanger and 40 MWh storage capacity in 24 container modules. The principle: We buy electricity when it's cheap and green. The heat is stored in concrete tubes and retrieved as process steam when needed – independent of electricity prices and availability. The system covers two-thirds of our annual steam demand and saves 4,600 tons of CO₂ per year. Grid-supportive, economically viable and designed for at least 25 years of operation.
