❄️ What do record winters have to do with a heatwave? 🔥 The Baltic Sea just experienced its most extensive ice coverage in a decade, with sea ice reaching ~160,000 km² in February 2026. But here's the twist: despite this record winter, the ice season ended remarkably early, driven by an unusually mild March. 👉 This paradox captures an uncomfortable truth about our changing #climate: it's not simply getting warmer. It's becoming less predictable. Extreme cold events can still happen. Winter seasons can be intense one month and mild the next. #Variability is the new normal. For communities and industries dependent on the Baltic Sea, this unpredictability poses a critical challenge. How do you plan #infrastructure, #shipping routes, or resource management when conditions shift this rapidly? 🌍 This is where digital twins come in. At #TerraDT, we're developing advanced digital twin technologies that help stakeholders model ice conditions, predict trends, and prepare for an ever more variable climate. Read the full story to understand why this 10-year ice record tells us much more about our climate future than you think. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dKYNRF3v #ClimateChange #DigitalTwin #BalticSea #ClimateAdaptation #EarthSystemScience CSC - IT Center for Science Jenni Kontkanen Rivo Uiboupin TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology TalTech Department of Marine Systems Finnish Meteorological Institute - Ilmatieteen laitos
