The renewed momentum for #enlargement could act as a catalyst for democratic improvements in the Western Balkans. Yet, decades of stalled integration have caused widespread frustration and the opportunity for foreign interference. 🗳️ So how can democratic resilience be rebuilt in the region? Carnegie Europe's Richard Youngs and Elena Ventura provide the following recommendations: 🔹 Anchor enlargement on merit-based conditionality; 🔹Embed the fight against disinformation and hybrid threat in EU democracy support; 🔹Deliver visible short-term integration benefits; 🔹Strengthen support to civil society and independent media.
