📣 ten23 health is proud to sponsor the 2026 Michael J. Pikal Symposium, August 18–19 at the University of Connecticut. ❄️❄️Professor Michael J. Pikal was one of the defining scientists in pharmaceutical lyophilization. His work on heat and mass transfer, including the quantitative role of vial geometry on product quality, set a benchmark the field continues to reference. His mechanistic characterization of amorphous systems, spanning glass transition temperature, glass fragility, and molecular mobility, gave formulation scientists a rational basis for freeze-dried biologic design. His contributions to process monitoring were equally landmark. Manometric temperature measurement enabled non-invasive product temperature profiling alongside mass transfer resistance and vial heat transfer coefficients. His lab at UConn also pioneered tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy as an in-process mass flow meter, an early and important step toward #QbD in lyophilization. ❄️❄️ This symposium, inaugurated in his memory, carries that scientific rigor forward. At ten23, lyophilization process development and formulation science are core capabilities, built into how we support partners from cycle design and DoE through in-process analytics and GMP manufacturing.
