A project developed at the UTM Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning by graduate Maxim Kaluian has entered an international professional circuit. His diploma work proposes the reconstruction of the Eugène Ionesco National Theatre in Chișinău, with the aim of transforming the building into a functional theatre adapted to contemporary use. The project was based on applied research, including an analysis of the building, its location, the urban context and the necessary measurements. This process led to a complex architectural solution, focused on both visual identity and spatial performance. The façade concept draws on the image of a stage curtain, translated into white metal panels rotated at 45 degrees. Beyond its visual effect, the solution filters natural light and helps reduce overheating in the main hall, addressing the current challenges created by the glass façade. As Maxim explains, the project seeks a balance between elegance and functionality – a key responsibility of the architect. The work was appreciated during the bachelor’s thesis defense and later presented at the 2025 National Architecture Biennale of Romania, BNA „Altfel”, where it received the OAR Iași–Vaslui Branch Award in the emerging architects section. It was also featured in Arhitectura magazine, published by the Union of Architects of Romania. At UTM, we support students who work on real urban challenges and develop ideas with professional relevance. In this case, a bachelor’s thesis became a proposal with real potential for Chișinău. https://lnkd.in/duiJfi7R
