LEGALLY SPEAKING WITH TARUN NANGIA / 1st media man to interview sitting Supreme Court Judge
Bombay High Court / Jain Community / Slaughterhouse Closure During Paryushan Jain Community vs BMC • Case: Jain community challenges BMC order restricting closure of slaughterhouses to only 2 days during Paryushan Parva (Aug 24 & Aug 27 – Ganesh Chaturthi). • Petitioners: • Adv Abhinav Chandrachud argued that Mumbai has a larger Jain population than Ahmedabad, which has already ordered full closure during Paryushan. • Arguments: • Sr Adv Prasad Dhakephalkar (for Jains): • BMC wrongly compared Jain population with Mumbai’s entire population, including vegetarians. • “They must compare Jains only with non-vegetarians. Many are observing Shravan fasts, so half the non-vegetarians aren’t even consuming meat.” • Added: “It was easier to persuade Emperor Akbar to shut slaughterhouses during Paryushan in Gujarat, but very difficult to convince Maharashtra Govt and BMC today.” • Bench: Chief Justice Alok Aradhe & Justice Sandeep Marne. • CJ Aradhe: “But for this, you will have to convince them (BMC).” Rgds.
