It was a pleasure to appear before the Senate, Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee today to give evidence at its inquiry into Offshore processing and resettlement arrangements alongside Carina Ford (Chair, Migration Law Committee, LCA) and Chiara Angeloni (Principal Policy Lawyer, LCA). At the hearing we emphasised that the use of offshore processing and resettlement arrangements does not absolve the Australian Government from its responsibilities regarding human rights, including chain refoulement risks. We also called on the Committee to recommend publication of the Memorandum of Understanding with Nauru, so that the Committee, Parliament and independent bodies can assess whether human rights obligations are being met in practice.
