From a spur-of-the-moment idea to a IT talent community supporting hundreds...and the smiling faces say it all! On 27 June, Margaret Gilbert and I had a simple idea: create a space where job seekers could break the isolation, loneliness and solitude of job seeking. We agreed that if no one else showed up, we'd spend an hour having a chat over coffee. Well, didn't you show up. What started as a conversation between two people has become something extraordinary: - Every Friday since June, the Job Seeker Cafe has opened it's doors. We've shown up with a different, interesting Guest Barista to lead conversations that should run for an hour but regularly stretch to 1.5-2 hours (because that's what happens when people finally find others who understand their plight) - Up to 75 attendees join our virtual Friday sessions, plus our legendary trivia quiz, brilliantly sponsored by our amazing supporters at Bennetti Coffee Roasters! And thanks to Tomas Jajesnica for being our amazing Guest Barista last Friday and your leadership on mediation and mental health. - IRL Job Seeker Cafés have sprung up organically in hashtag #Brisbane, hashtag #Melbourne and hashtag #Sydney with more than 50 people showing up in person (thank you Margaret Gilbert, Roger Lawrence, Desiree Roque, Susan Mackay, David Bonnett and Phil Kan for your IRL support). But here's what really matters: The Job Seeker Café is being credited with helping people find jobs, receive support and feel part of a community and a movement. To be noticed. Seen. Heard. Your positive feedback has been overwhelming. So we're going to keep going. Keep showing up.
