If you know the guy on the left, you'll probably understand why I left this event feeling inspired. If you don't... he's Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. And while this wasn't just another motorsport talk, it was packed with lessons that apply just as much to business as they do to race weekends. I'm fortunate to attend events like this through the relationships I've built over the years, but this one genuinely stood out. Here are the biggest takeaways that I think every business leader and team can learn from: 🏁 Protect your decision-making energy Don't waste brainpower on decisions that don't matter. Toto simplifies everything he can: His race weekend wardrobe is laid out from left to right. He eats exactly the same lunch and dinner each day (the only difference? Lunch comes with a coffee, dinner doesn't). The fewer unnecessary decisions you make, the more energy you have for the ones that really count. 📊 The 80/20 principle Talent is roughly 80% nature and 20% nurture. Even in Formula 1, developing great people matters—but recognising natural strengths matters just as much. 🧩 Every team needs an all-rounder Mercedes has 2,498 specialists working to help two drivers succeed. But one of the most valuable roles isn't another specialist—it's someone who can connect the dots, see the bigger picture, and bring everyone together. 👤 Humans are usually the weakest link Technology is incredible, but people are where mistakes are most likely to happen. Great systems acknowledge that and are built to minimise human error. 😴 Performance starts with recovery Despite constant travel and changing time zones, sleep is treated as a performance tool, not a luxury. Nutrition is equally important. High performance isn't just about working harder—it's about recovering better. 🔄 Mistakes are inevitable Make them. Learn from them. Move on quickly. Just don't keep making the same one. 🎯 Success looks different for everyone For Mercedes, success is winning. For another team, success might be finishing sixth. Success should always be measured against your own goals—not someone else's. 🤝 Compete fairly, but remember the team comes first Drivers have individual ambitions, but team success is always the priority. The same applies in business: when the team wins, everyone wins. There were plenty more insights, but these were the ones that stuck with me the most. It's always fascinating when lessons from elite sport translate so naturally into leadership and business. If you're curious to hear more or want to know the story behind the longest F1 tyre change, I'd happily share stories over a fairly average, overpriced coffee. ☕ #businesslessons #leadership #motorsport #mindset #growth
