Every renewable fuel technology requires a carbon source. While our technology works with a wide range of carbon sources, not every feedstock is equally suited for large-scale fuel production. Many of today’s renewable fuels are produced from used cooking oil and animal fats, which are limited and expected to hit availability ceilings in the 2030s. Synhelion, on the other hand, can use a broad range of biogenic waste streams that are low-cost and scalable. Before entering our process, the biogenic waste is converted into raw biogas through anaerobic digestion, a well-established process that has been used in agriculture for decades. The International Energy Agency (IEA) indicates that global biogas resources are abundant enough to generate a volume of sustainable jet fuel that would meet – and even exceed – the aviation sector’s current annual demand. But scale is only half the story. Many biogenic waste streams are also available at low cost. That matters, because cheap feedstock translates directly into affordable fuel.
