How did the TBM cross the road? 👀With LiDAR technology! As tunnelling comes to and end on the Sydney Metro West project, our TBMs are travelling from Sydney to Newcastle to be decommissioned with parts either recycled or returned to the manufacturer.  While it sounds simple, moving a giant tunnel boring machine isn't as easy as loading it onto a truck. With the cutterhead measuring 7 metres wide, it takes some serious planning before anything can move! That's where LiDAR technology comes in. Using rapid laser pulses, the LiDAR scanner scans the entire route from a moving vehicle, measuring road widths, overhead wire heights and any potential hazards along the way. The result?  A detailed 3D map of the full 200km route helping our teams plan the move safely and efficiently, without a single road closure 🚗✅
