Meet Troy Thompson, a former Western University football player turned Contract Surety Underwriter, whose journey shows how the mindset developed through sport can become a foundation for success beyond the game. Following Western's 2023 Mitchell Bowl season, Troy made the decision to step away from football. However, rather than waiting until his playing career was over, Troy began preparing for life beyond football while he was still competing. Through internships, networking, and exploring opportunities in finance, he discovered a career in the insurance and surety industry that combined his education with his family's background in construction. Today, Troy is a Contract Surety Underwriter at Aviva Canada, where he helps contractors secure opportunities and manage risk. Troy's story is a reminder that the lessons learned through sport don't end when the final whistle blows. Years of receiving feedback, adapting to change, and embracing challenges taught him to be coachable, resilient, and committed to continuous growth, qualities that continue to shape his career today. His advice to athletes is simple: approach every stage of life with the same discipline, resilience, and willingness to learn that made you successful in sport.
