Transmission Zero researchers describe the first ever generation of a transgenic mosquito in Africa – a huge achievement and a big step towards locally-engineered genetic tools for malaria control. The researchers successfully demonstrated that these gene-edited mosquitoes carrying antimalarial traits can inhibit wild-circulating parasites in Tanzania, when tested under containment in purpose-built high-biosafety facilities. The findings were published today in Nature. Transmission Zero is a partnership between the Ifakara Health Institute, Imperial College London, National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) - Tanzania, and Swiss TPH and we are proud to be working towards a malaria-free Africa together.
