On June 2nd, the results of the SAKK 96/12 REDUSE study will be presented in Chicago at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). This research was conducted by the Swiss Cancer Institute under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Roger von Moos. It addresses a vital question for people living with bone metastases from breast or prostate cancer: Can treatment be given less frequently without compromising safety? Currently, the drug denosumab is administered at short intervals to prevent serious complications such as painful bone fractures, severe pain, or the need for surgery and radiation. This study investigates whether a less intensive therapy reduces side effects and eases the daily burden on patients. Crucially, it remains uncertain whether the protection for the bones is truly fully maintained with longer intervals or if the frequent schedule remains necessary. The data from Chicago will provide the needed clarity. If this less intensive approach proves successful, it would significantly improve the quality of life for those affected while also lowering costs for the entire healthcare system. We will report on the implications for clinical practice immediately following the publication. #ASCO2026 #CancerResearch #ClinicalTrials #BreastCancer #ProstateCancer #BoneMetastases #Oncology #SwissCancerInstitute #SAKK
