As several European cities experience record-breaking temperatures at the moment, the need to adapt our urban environments is becoming increasingly urgent. Communities must rethink how streets, public spaces and neighbourhoods are planned to protect health, maintain quality of life and support vulnerable groups — particularly older populations. In our latest article, we highlight examples of how this shift is already taking shape. In Odense, Denmark, Sweco developed a digital heat map that combines surface temperature data with demographic and urban data to identify where action is needed most and evaluate the impact of different cooling measures. In Ängelholm, Sweden, Sweco carried out a heat vulnerability analysis across urban areas and assessed how exposed facilities such as preschools and care homes are during extreme heat — helping create safer and more resilient environments. Creating cooler cities is not only about adding more greenery. It is about using data, planning and design to build healthier, more resilient places for a warmer future.
