Have you ever wondered if an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an eco-label? The clear answer is: No. An EPD is a Type III environmental declaration according to ISO 14025. It provides standardized, verified and transparent environmental data based on life cycle assessment, but it does not make a value judgment about whether a product is “good” or “bad” from an environmental perspective. It does not indicate: ❌ Compliance with predefined environmental limits ❌ Technical performance ❌ How products rank against each other What it does provide: ✅ Standardized and verified environmental data Interpretation requires context, including: 🛣️ Durability (service life) 📈 Performance retention ⚙️ Application method 🌍 Relevant environmental benchmarks and reference values A road marking with a low initial environmental impact but a short service life may perform worse over its entire lifecycle than a more durable alternative. Likewise, environmental data becomes meaningful only when compared with relevant benchmarks, alternative solutions, or project-specific requirements. Sustainable decision-making requires a holistic perspective: EPD data ➕ Performance ➕ Durability ➕ Benchmarking Only by considering all relevant factors can road infrastructure solutions be evaluated in a meaningful and long-term sustainable way. #SWARCO #RoadMarkingSystems #EPD #Sustainability #Transparency
