Kenya is showing how e-mobility is about economics, energy security, and real opportunities on the ground. Across the country, electric transport is already improving livelihoods, reducing fuel dependency, and strengthening the energy system - faster than many of us in Europe might expect. A few takeaways: ⚡ Electric motorcycle taxis (bodabodas) have now reached price parity. With higher profits already reported by drivers, adoption is accelerating rapidly. 🚌 Electric buses are being assembled locally in Nairobi, and electrification is beginning to reach the iconic matatus. 🔌 Kenya has introduced dedicated transport electricity tariffs, allowing vehicles to charge at times when the grid is less stressed - at lower prices. A smart solution many countries, including Norway, could learn from. ⚖️ The government is backing the transition with strong incentives. President William Ruto has announced that the first 100,000 electric vehicles imported into Kenya will be exempt from import duties - lowering costs and accelerating adoption. 📜 Earlier this year, Kenya launched its national e‑mobility strategy, setting a clear direction towards a zero-emission transport sector and greater energy independence 👉 Read more in links in comments ⛽ The ongoing fuel crisis is hitting oil-importing countries like Kenya hard. Transitioning to zero-emission vehicles is a way out of oil dependency. 🌍 Scaling up zero-emission transport means cleaner cities, a reduced trade deficit, and strengthening national energy providers such as Kenya Power (KPLC). Impressive to see how quickly things are moving - and how e-mobility is already becoming an economic opportunity. Thank you Winnie Miranyi, Bob Wesonga, Warren O., and the rest of the team at Africa E-Mobility Alliance for being such great hosts in Kenya, for arranging site visits at ARCRIDE Solutions, BasiGo and MojaEV Africa and for meeting EV drivers, including the motorcycle drivers’ association Bodaboda Friends Of The Community. It was also great to connect with Electric Mobility Association of Kenya (EMAK), and see their amazing work led by Hezbon Mose Since I am working for an electric drivers’ association myself, I was especially thrilled to meet Kate, Ishamel and Julias who represent Bodaboda electric drivers at Bodaboda Friends Of The Community #Afema #EMAK #BasiGo #ArcRide #MojaEV #BodaBoda #KPLC #Emobility #Kenya #JustTransition
